1. Barite Market: Global Industry Analysis and Opportunity Assessment 2014 - 2020    https://www.futuremarketinsights.com/reports/global-barite-market

Product Synopsis

Barite is a mineral that is rich in barium. Barite commonly occurs in the large number of depositional environment and it is found in the zinc-lead veins in limestone, in the hot spring deposits and in the hematite ore. Barite is also found alongside meteorites. Barite is relatively inert and also exhibits a physical property of high density. Barite is widely used as a weighting agent in the drilling muds. Barite also finds other applications in the electrical and electronics, rubber, ceramics, paints radiation shielding, medical and glass industry among others. China, India, Morocco and U.S. are expected to be the largest producers of barite. The total barite resources across the globe in all categories are around 2 billion tons, however, only 740 million tons is considered among the identified resources.

Most of the barite manufactured is used as a weighting agent in the drilling fluids that are used in the oil and gas exploration. Barites are mainly used to suppress the high formation fluids and also to prevent blowouts. The quantity of barite used is mainly dependent on the depth of the hole that has to be bored. The deeper the hole, more the barite is required. Barite is non-magnetic in nature and hence, it does not interfere with the magnetic measurements that are taken during boring the hole making barite an ideal choice for the drilling fluids. Barite is widely used in the manufacturing of paints and coatings. Thus, the growing automobile industry is expected to boost the overall growth of the paints and coatings industry which in turn is expected to drive the growth of the overall barite market. The global barite market is expected to grow owing to its increasing demand in other applications such as textiles, paper and paints among others. Though, there are alternatives to barite such as ilmenite, celestite, iron ore and synthetic hematite, none of these substitutes had a major impact on the barite drilling mud industry.

Barites offer several benefits such as good stability, strong inertia, moderate rigidity, acid and alkali proof and high specific gravity. Due to such advantages, barite is widely used in applications including engineering plastic, middle and high-grade paint, medicine compounding, rubber, pottery, paper-making and cosmetics among others. The main types of barites are ground barite, finely ground barite and bleached barite. Ground barite is used as filler in the production of oil cloth, linoleum, paper, textile, plastics and rubber. Finely ground barite finds use in making thixotropic mud for sealing oil wells in drilling applications and bleached barite is used as a pigment in white paint.

Considering the rapidly growing oil and gas drilling industry, the demand for barite is expected to record a strong growth in the coming years. India and China hold a dominant position in the barite supply and have increased prices significantly in the recent times. Owing to this, there is an increased focus on discovering and developing new barite resources across the world. While India and China are anticipated to dominate the barite production and export, mining projects in several stages of development are ongoing in countries such as Liberia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, and Zimbabwe.

Some of the key participants of the barite market include Desku Group Inc., SMIMTAF, Shijiazhuang Oushun Minerals Products Co. Ltd., Shanghai Titanos Industry Co., Ltd., CMS Industries and V&P Corporation among others.

Of late, the global barite market has been experiencing an intense competition between the leading companies, namely, APMDC, China Shen Zhou Mining and Resources Inc., Halliburton Co., Excalibar Minerals LLC, and Ashapura Minechem Ltd., finds a report by Transparency Market Research (TMR). The market has been demonstrating a highly fragmented structure, with these companies holding only 31.1% share of the overall market in 2015.

Currently, the leading vendors of barite across the world are making strategic alliances to increase their market share. Analysts at TMR expect these firms to increase investments in novel barite-mining projects in order to expand their reserves over the next few years.

The report estimates the opportunity in the global market for barite, which was worth US$1.29 bn in 2015, to progress at a CAGR of 4.10% during the period from 2016 to 2024 and reach a value of US$1.85 bn by the end of the forecast period. In terms of volume, the market is likely to cross 11,645.7 kilo tons by 2024. Accounting for a share of more than 70%, drilling mud emerged as the key application segment of this market in 2015. Researchers expect the scenario to remain so over the period of forecast.

Asia Pacific is also emerging as a potential market for barite, thanks to the remarkable growth in the rubber and plastic industry in this region. Going forward, this regional market is likely to present most promising growth opportunities to barite vendors across the world in the near future. On the other hand, the markets for barite in Latin America and the Middle East and Africa are projected to demonstrate stable growth throughout the forecast period, states the research report.

North America to Retain its Position in Global Barite Market

Increase in Oil and Gas Production to Boost Demand for Barite

As barites have high specific gravity, they are used as weighting agents in drilling fluids, which make them an essential component of the process of oil and gas production. “With the increasing demand for energy across the world, the oil and gas production is witnessing a monumental rise, which consequently, is influencing the demand for barite, globally,” says the author of this study.

The increasing usage of barite as a filler agent in plastics, paints, and rubber is also projected to reflect positively on the global market for barite over the forecast period. However, the stringent regulations of various governments and their interference over the production of barite may hamper the growth of this market, notes the study..

4. What is Barytes ?-Introduction  http://www.barytes.org/barytes.html

 1.Uses of Barytes.

Barytes (or barite) is the naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate. Its main properties are its high specific gravity (4.5), very low solubility; it is non-toxic, and also chemically and physically unreactive.

It is extracted by both surface and underground mining, followed by simple physical processing methods to produce correctly sized product and to remove extraneous materials.

Some 70% worldwide is used as a weighting agent for drilling fluids in oil and gas exploration. Other uses are in added-value applications which include the car, electronics, TV screen, rubber, and glass ceramics and paint industry, radiation shielding and medical applications (barium meals). Barytes is supplied in a variety of forms and the price depends on the amount of processing; filler applications commanding higher prices following intense physical processing by grinding and micronising, and there are further premiums for whiteness and brightness and colour.

It is extracted by both surface and underground mining, followed by simple physical processing methods to produce correctly sized product and to remove extraneous materials.

 2.Uses of Barytes.

 Applications.

General

Oil industry (69%)

Chemical - electronics, TV screen, glass, ceramics and medical applications (barium meals) (16%)

Fillers - car, rubber and paint industry, radiation shielding (15%).

 Factors affecting demand.

Growing demand for oil drilling and filler applications but world recession has hit automotive industry.

Chemical demand has fallen due to a dramatic switch to LCD/plasma TV and computer screens which use less barytes, but applications in the dielectrics, electro-ceramic and construction industry have risen.

 General.

70% European domestic production for added-value sectors – overall the chemical and filler industries account for half of the barytes consumption.

In the USA over 95% output is for the oil industry.

China is 42% of world production; with India, Morocco and US a further 32%.

 3.Benefits of Barytes.

Barytes is an environmentally friendly material as it is a natural product and not manufactured; and not subject to registration under the EU REACH regulations. Substitution potential exists but the alternates in the oil industry (eg ilmenite, haematite) are economically less attractive. Cheaper alternate ground limestone or clays are sometimes used on economy grounds in some filler applications where quality or technical considerations are less stringent.

  • Natural Product

  • Non Toxic

  • Inexpensive

  • Inert - Chemically and physically unreactive; and to eco-systems

  • High specific Gravity

  • Good sound-deadening and radiation-shielding

  • Low oil adsorption.

 4.Barytes Statistics.

World production is broadly linked to oil-well drilling activity and has increased from 6.0- 6.5Mtpa in the early 2000s to 9.7Mt in 2014 - but fell to 8Mt in 2015 and to 7.3Mt in 2016 as a result of low oil prices and reduced drilling activity.  China accounts for just over 40% of world production with India, Morocco, USA, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, Iran, Kazakhstan and  Thailand accounting for around 50%. The USA was only the second largest consumer at around 1.6 million tpa in 2016 - down nearly 2Mt from 2014.;   the Middle East used  1.7Mt and China 1.5Mt.

Europe consumption (including Norway and Turkey) is around 0.6 million tpa of which some 2/3 is sourced domestically. Some 70% of the production is into added-value markets so a significant proportion is an export earner, and a higher proportion of the oil-well industry requirement imported. Germany, Bulgaria and UK account for over 90% of the EU-27 output.

World production in 2016 was around 7.3 million tonnes…90% from.

World consumption was 7.3 million tonnes.. 91% from.
